Airtel customers can now log on to chat with friends and family. The company has unveiled Airtel Messenger that allows mobile users to text chat within a personalized community or set of communities.
According to a report, the service allows Airtel mobile customers to get a desktop chat experience on their mobiles. Users can send and receive messages in real time via their mobile phones without the need to be attached to a computer, the report added. And this is not all. According to a review report of the Airtel Messenger, the service incorporates personalized features like options like online and offline, busy and the like.
Users can also convey multiple emoticons while in conversation and also have multiple textual conversations at the same time. Another significant addition is the presence-enabled address book helps senders know when their contacts are online.
The Airtel Messenger is seen as a convenient and value-added text-messaging service that will largely appeal to young professionals who want to be in constant touch with their friends, family, and business associates. Customers, who have a GPRS and Airtel Live-activated handset, can download the Airtel Messenger by registering fo the service by sending an SMS to 57070 with the message 'IM'. Bharti has said that it would offer Airtel Messenger free-of-cost till August 31, 2007.

IB chiefs sore over Chinese mobile phone glut
The Chinese mobile handsets that flood the Indian market may be a cause of cheer for consumers but definitely not for the Indian security agencies. The Intelligence officials are so upset that the issue is likely to be the key discussion topic at the two-day meet on terrorism starting next September 15, 2008.
The meet will be chaired by the Intelligence Bureau Chief P C Haldar and will be attended by top cops of the country, to discuss ways and means to check terror funding, besides devising institutional responses to the growing technological sophistication of terrorist outfits.
The concern about Chinese handsets stems from the fact that these mobile phones do not have any IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number on them. This makes tracing them a difficult task if terror groups choose to use them for communication and execution of their nefarious designs. The agencies fear that terrorist groups might extensively use such handsets to evade detection.
The issue also figured at a high-level meeting of the Union Home Ministry, which was chaired by Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta on August 8 in the wake of back-to-back serial blasts in Bangalore and Ahmedabad in July. The directors-general of police (DGPs) and the chief secretaries of States and Union Territories also expressed concern over the sale of Chinese handsets and the security implications related to it.
The handsets are issued in bulk by Chinese mobile phone companies in lots of 100, 1,000 and 5,000 with a common IMEI number, which makes it difficult for security agencies to track actual calls made from any of these phones. The common IMEI number for a bulk of the handsets entering the market makes it difficult for security and intelligence agencies to trace the individual mobile phone from which the calls are made.
The IMEI is a unique 17-or 15-digit code used to identify an individual mobile station to a GSM or any other network. The code is important as it uniquely identifies a specific mobile phone being used on a mobile network. The IMEI is a useful tool in preventing a stolen handset from accessing a network.
Mobile phone owners whose sets are stolen, can contact their service provider and ask it to disable a phone using the IMEI number. With an IMEI number, the phone can be blocked from the network quickly and easily.
“If a call is made from a mobile phone handset issued in a lot of 5,000, it will make the task of tracing the caller very difficult,” said a senior intelligence officer. The problem is compounded by the fact that most of cellular phone sets are sold by unregistered sellers, he added.

The Union Home Ministry has in the past blocked the foray of a major Chinese telecom equipment supplier, Huawei, into the ports sector owing to security implications.
The National Technical Research Organisation suspects that the controversial Chinese equipment company is tracking the telephones and e-mail addresses of senior officials of the armed forces, top bureaucrats and industry captains.
Following the NTRO inputs, a joint intelligence committee meeting last year had labeled the company as a security threat, a senior Union Home Ministry official said.
Gurgaon-based Huawei officials confirmed that intelligence sleuths had been visiting the company's research and development centre in Bangalore and its order book from the public sector telecom majors had been shrinking due the development.
However, the company officials formally maintained that the company was a legal corporate and such “allegations” were unfounded.

As if all the chatter about Apple iPhone’s pending arrival in Canada later this year wasn’t enough, we’re now hearing through a Taiwanese news site that Apple may roll out three new iPhone models this summer.
Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. has apparently received an order to make 25 million units of the next-generation iPhone and would begin to ship the phones in June, the Taiwan Economic News reported on Wednesday.
The online report says Apple plans to diversify its iPhone product line in order to widen its reach in the mobile phone market. The new models will adopt a smaller, plastic casing, instead of its current display of aluminum magnesium. Other reports even suggest the possibility of a 5 megapixel camera, video recording and playback and an FM radio tuner.
One of the three new models won't offer 3G support, but the report says Apple intends selling a higher-specified iPhone equipped with such support.
The new models will weigh between 110 and 120 grams, much lighter than the 135-gram weight of the current one. It will also offer a 2.8-inch screen, rather than the 3.5-inch screen currently offered on the iPhone.
Earlier this week, Rogers Communications Inc. confirmed that the all-in-one touch screen iPhone would be available on its network later this year.

So you thought the iPhone's insanely high price tag is due to all the fancy technology inside? Not so, my friend. That touchscreen that everyone is popping tents over only costs $33.50, with the touchscreen controller adding a mere $1.15 to the price. In fact, Apple stands to make a healthy 50% profit on both versions of the iPhone sold, with the costs of the 4- and 8-gig models only running $245.83 and $280.83, respectively.
All that profit and we're still forced to sign our lives away to Cingular AT&T for 2 years for the privilege of buying this phone. If it's not being subsidized, why the hell are we still forced to sign a contract? Weak, very weak.

Indian consumers, who have waited for months to own the iconic 3G-enabled Apple iPhone, will have to pay Rs 31,000 for the entry-level 8GB memory mobile phone and Rs 36,100 for a model with double the memory.
Both Vodafone and Airtel will be launching the iPhone on August 22 and industry experts say bookings and pre-launch interest suggest that they would be able to sell over 100,000 phones in the next 12 months. Companies like Vodafone, which opened bookings for the phones in July, have already received booking requests of over 10,000 phones.
The domestic price, however, is much steeper than the US price. The handset is available for $199 (Rs 8,358) in the US, plus $99 (Rs 4,158) as an annual contract with the telecom company since the handsets are linked to the service provider.
These lower prices are possible because of the large subsidies that service providers are willing to provide to woo customers. In India however, neither company will offer a subsidy.
However, the non-3G Apple iPhone — which was launched by the company earlier — is available in the Indian grey market at around Rs 20,000, down from Rs 24,000 a few months ago. Grey market operators are now also cracking the codes for the 3G Apple iPhone and said it would be priced Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 cheaper than the Vodafone or Airtel price points. Second-hand 2G iPhones are available for around Rs 15,000.
The 3G iPhone will have faster downloads, an in-built GPS system and direct connections to YouTube, among other features.
Meanwhile, leading handset makers like Nokia, Motorola and Samsung have stepped up their R&D efforts to introduce feature-rich phones in India to compete with iPhones.
